My son has had a hernia repaired. Will he develop another hernia on the opposite side?
Thats a question for his doctor.
No normally not. Hernia is not such a disease that can develop again and again.
There is a slight increase in the chances of a hernia developing on the opposite side. This chance is greater if
(I) the baby was premature at birth,
(ii) the first hernia was on the left side and
(iii) in girls – especially if the first hernia was on the left side. Recurrence after surgery on the same side too is known, though this is rare if an experienced surgeon has done the operation.
Generally not, if you are worried then ask your doctor.
Unlikely, but he should be more active to gain muscle tone.
Have they put the mesh while repairing? If not, then he may develop hernia on the same side again. He should avoid constipation rest of his life. Hernia generally occurs due to constipation.
You might want to check into the comlications with the hernia mesh patch. Many have been recalled and there was an update on the recalled devices in Jan 07.
