My friend has just had a cannula removed she now has a sore angry lump that feels hot is this normal?
This sounds like an infection - most commonly caused by a bug that lives on the skin, but which does not case problems unless the skin is injured. This bug is called Staphylococcus epidermidis (albus). Other more troublesome bugs can cause infections around cannula sites, especially if the cannula has been in situ for a long time, the person has been on antibiotics or if the person is immunocompromised.
The pain and swelling suggest that there is inflammation related to the infection present. If the redness extends more than a few millimetres from where the cannula was located, it's likely that there is some infection under the skin - cellulitis. Your friend may also find that some pus is leaking from the cannula site. In extreme cases, red-tracking can occur and local lymph nodes can become painful.
Simple Staphyococcus infections respond well to the antibiotic flucloxacillin, but this may not be neccessary, if your friend is otherwise well, does not have a fever, the swelling is small and the symptoms are getting better. If any doubt, it would be worth seeing the GP
Hope your friend's symptoms resolve quickily.
Its not normal but unfortunately it is fairly common.
It sounds as if there is an element of cellulitis,(soft tissue infection). This is likely to need antibiotic therapy. If a line of redness spreads up from the site or your friend becomes feverish treatment then becomes more urgent.
Seek medical advice in the near future anyway!
yep i had the same tell her to rub some antiseptic cream on it every so often and hopefully that will help
